{"id":4319,"date":"2024-12-09T09:05:57","date_gmt":"2024-12-09T07:05:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.npa.gov.zm\/?p=4319"},"modified":"2024-12-09T09:06:04","modified_gmt":"2024-12-09T07:06:04","slug":"nigerian-nationals-convicted-over-k67-million-suspected-proceeds-of-crime-in-zambia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.npa.gov.zm\/index.php\/2024\/12\/09\/nigerian-nationals-convicted-over-k67-million-suspected-proceeds-of-crime-in-zambia\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigerian Nationals Convicted Over K67 Million Suspected Proceeds Of Crime In Zambia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>&nbsp;On 6th December 2024, Principal Resident Magistrate Ireen Wishimanga, convicted&nbsp; <strong>Adeyinka Adesola Olaoluwe<\/strong> and <strong>Margaret Oluwagbemisola Oyewole<\/strong>, both Nigerian nationals\u2014and three corporate entities: <strong>WH Energy and Allied Services<\/strong>, <strong>Coralstone Investment Limited<\/strong>, and <strong>Puregum Shipping Logistics Limited<\/strong> for the offence of being in possession of property reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime, contrary to Section 71(1) of the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crime Act No. 19 of 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The facts were that between 11th March 2021 and 10th June 2022, the accused were found to have possessed funds totaling <strong>ZMW 67 million<\/strong> held in a local Zambian accounts. The funds were determined to be reasonably suspected proceeds of crime. The accused were charged on <strong>seven counts<\/strong>, and the Magistrate convicted all accused on all counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The evidence presented by Senior State Advocate Mukuma Chipawa and State Advocate Nkumbu Kandyata, demonstrated a complex network of financial transactions involving large deposits in diverse foreign currency, rapid transfers, and withdrawals through shell companies. Investigations revealed that the entities operated without legitimate business activities, no Zambian clients, and false addresses registered with authorities. This raised red flags consistent with money laundering schemes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This conviction underscores the NPA\u2019s commitment to combating financial crime and ensuring the integrity of Zambia\u2019s financial system.
