Lady Justice Mwamba Chanda-Mate, Judge-in-Charge of the Family and Children’s Court Division, described the commemoration as “not merely a ceremonial occasion” but a moment for “reflection, accountability and renewed commitment” to children’s rights and welfare under this year’s theme: “Ensuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Every Child in Africa.”

The event drew a wide coalition including UNESCO, the University of Zambia, the Child Justice Forum, Undikumbukire Zambia, Barefeet Theatre, and various church and civil society organisations.

Highlights of the day included a facility tour and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) inspection, children’s performances in song, poetry and drama, a listening session with the children, and the handover of hygiene and winter care packs. Additionally, a sentencing and orders session was held right at the facility, presided over by Hon. Judge Mariam Bar-Matandala, bringing justice to the children where they are.

Addressing the children, Hon. Lady Justice Chanda-Mate assured them: “You are not forgotten. Your voices matter. Your health matters. And your future matters.”

Hon. Lady Justice Gertrude Chawatama of the Supreme Court and Vice-President of the Zambia Association of Women Judges, alongside Hon. Lady Justice Sharon Newa, also graced the occasion.

The Children’s Code Act No. 10 of 2022 was highlighted as the legal framework requiring that the best interests of the child be paramount, with Hon. Lady Justice Chanda-Mate stressing that dignity, health and development cannot be realised where children lack clean water, proper sanitation and hygiene.

For the NPA, the engagement underscores its commitment to child-sensitive justice beyond the courtroom, a reminder that any justice system is measured by how it treats the vulnerable and voiceless.

The commemoration ended with a call to action that speeches must translate into practical interventions, from unblocking toilets and providing soap to ensuring courts handle children’s matters with urgency.

Lusaka | July 1, 2026 – The Gender-Based Crime and Child Protection Department of the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) yesterday traded the formal confines of the courtroom for the corridors of lived reality, joining the Zambia Association of Women Judges and other key stakeholders at Kamwala Transit Centre to mark the Day of the African […]

[8
["post-6079","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
["GET
