{"id":6252,"date":"2026-09-18T08:59:31","date_gmt":"2026-09-18T06:59:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.npa.gov.zm\/?p=6252"},"modified":"2026-09-18T08:59:36","modified_gmt":"2026-09-18T06:59:36","slug":"prosecutors-take-the-law-to-zambias-young-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.npa.gov.zm\/index.php\/2026\/09\/18\/prosecutors-take-the-law-to-zambias-young-people\/","title":{"rendered":"PROSECUTORS TAKE THE LAW TO ZAMBIA\u2019S YOUNG PEOPLE"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lusaka | September 17, 2026 &#8211; For one week, prosecutors traded courtroom benches for school halls and assembly grounds, answering questions, explaining the law and, at one memorable careers fair, even dressing pupils in lawyers\u2019 robes and wigs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was one of the defining features of the inaugural National Prosecution Authority (NPA) Week, held from 7 to 11 September 2026, when prosecutors across Zambia stepped out of their offices and courtrooms to meet the people they serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Young people were an important part of that conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this article we share what happened across 11 schools in four provinces, NPA teams combined career talks with practical conversations about the law, rights, crime prevention and access to justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NORTH-WESTERN PROVINCE<br>At Chiweza Girls Secondary School in Kabompo, learners discussed defilement, children\u2019s rights and the importance of promptly reporting abuse, while also learning about the NPA\u2019s role in prosecuting criminal cases and the values needed for careers in the justice sector.<br>See moments from the Chiweza Girls engagement below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Kyamwina Primary School in Mufumbwe, the focus was on child protection, with learners sensitised on assault on a child, defilement, indecent assault and drug-related offences and encouraged to recognise and report harmful conduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A glimpse of the Kyamwina Primary School engagement below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation continued at Jairos Fumba Secondary School, where learners were similarly sensitised on offences affecting children and young people, their rights and the importance of early reporting and seeking help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take a look at the Jairos Fumba engagement below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Zambezi Boarding School, the NPA joined the Zambia Police Service, Drug Enforcement Commission and Legal Aid Board for a multi-agency session on drug abuse and gender-based violence, giving learners practical information on prevention, reporting and the roles of different justice-sector institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">See the Zambezi engagement in pictures below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Solwezi Boys Technical School, prosecutors tackled some of the emerging threats facing young people including sextortion, cybercrime, artisanal mining traps, child marriage and early marriage, while explaining the NPA\u2019s mandate and how criminal matters can be reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Solwezi engagement, in pictures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LUAPULA PROVINCE<br>At Kombaniya Combined School in Mansa, hundreds of Grades 8 to 12 pupils were introduced to the NPA, its structure and mandate and the pathway from secondary school to admission to the Bar.<br>The career talk came alive when two pupils were dressed in lawyers\u2019 robes and wigs, giving their schoolmates a memorable picture of a profession they could aspire to. The session also covered defilement, early child marriage, bullying, physical assault, gang rape and online-related offences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A look at the Kombaniya careers fair below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NORTHERN PROVINCE<br>At Ituna Secondary School, State Advocate Ms. Esther Mushanga engaged pupils on careers in law and the role of lawyers and prosecutors in administering criminal justice, encouraging them to pursue their aspirations and appreciate the profession\u2019s contribution to justice and the rule of law.<br>The Ituna engagement in pictures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SOUTHERN PROVINCE<br>In Southern Province, NPA teams visited Chimulute Trust Academy in Livingstone, Munungu Secondary School in Monze, Macha Girls Secondary School in Choma and Namulonga Primary School in Mazabuka.<br>Across the four schools, pupils were introduced to the NPA\u2019s origins, vision, mission, core values and mandate, as well as the work of public prosecutors and state advocates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The teams also broadened the career conversation, showing pupils that the NPA relies not only on lawyers but also on human resource officers, accountants, procurement staff, statisticians, secretaries, registry clerks, drivers, transport officers and office orderlies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">See highlights from the Chimulute Trust Academy engagement below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A snapshot of the Munungu Secondary School engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More moments from Macha Girls Secondary School below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A glimpse of the Namulonga Primary School engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More Than a Career Talk<br>Taken together, the 11 engagements were about far more than encouraging young people to become lawyers.<br>They were about making the prosecutor known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learners were encouraged to know their rights, recognise criminal conduct, speak up, report offences early and seek help when their safety or rights are threatened. They also had the opportunity to meet prosecutors outside the formal setting of a courtroom and understand the institution that prosecutes criminal cases in their name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was the significance of taking the NPA into classrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The law became a conversation rather than something distant and technical. The prosecutor became a person pupils could question. And the justice system became something they could see themselves participating in\u2014whether as lawyers, prosecutors or one of the many professionals who support the administration of justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The school outreach was part of a much bigger idea behind the first NPA Week: bringing the Authority closer to the public and making justice better understood and more accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The launch of the NPA Service Charter on NPA Day gave that engagement an important next step\u2014a formal commitment setting out the relationship between the NPA and the public it serves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The banners may have come down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The classrooms may have returned to their usual lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the doors to the NPA remain open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And with NPA Week now established as an annual national event, the Authority\u2019s engagement with the public is not ending with one week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prosecutor came to the classroom.
