Lusaka | August 19, 2026 – Prosecutors at the National Prosecution Authority have received practical insights into the Solid Waste Regulation and Management Act No. 20 of 2018 following an interactive engagement with the Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company.
The session, held at NPA Headquarters and attended virtually by prosecutors across the country, followed the August 4, 2026 signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions, formalising collaboration on prosecuting solid waste offences.
A three-member LISWMC delegation comprising Mr. Kennedy Chishimba, Operations Manager for LISWMC, Mr. Sitola Sitwala Sambwa, Legal Counsel and Ms. Nchimunya Mwiinga, a Senior Standards and Investigations Officer took prosecutors through the company’s mandate, key provisions of the Act, and practical challenges encountered in implementation.
The engagement provided an opportunity for prosecutors to seek clarification on technical and operational aspects of solid waste management important in building and presenting cases before the courts. Prosecutors also shared proposals aimed at strengthening implementation and enforcement of the law.
Mrs. Martha Weeza-Tembo, Deputy Chief State Advocate in the NPA’s Environmental and Wildlife Crimes Department said such engagements are important in equipping prosecutors with the technical understanding required to effectively handle environmental offences.
The session accentuated the value of collaboration between institutions whose mandates intersect in environmental protection and enforcement.
For the NPA, the objective is clear: better understanding of the law, stronger cases, and more effective prosecution of environmental offences.
