Zambia participates at the 10th session of the Conference of States Parties (COSP)

Atlanta, Dec. 12, 2023. The United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) Conference of State Parties (CoSP) is the main policymaking body established pursuant to article 63 of the (UNCAC). The Conference aims at improving the capacity of and cooperation between States Parties, to achieve the objectives set forth in the Convention and to promote and review its implementation. The tenth session of the CoSP is currently taking place in Atlanta, USA, commemorating the momentous occasion of the 20th anniversary of the UNCAC and shaping a collective vision for the future of our anti-corruption efforts. The National Prosecution Authority (NPA) wishes to inform the public that on the 13th, 15th and 16th of November 2023 respectively, it scored three landmark victories in the fight against economic and financial crimes and successfully facilitated the forfeiture to the State of high value properties and colossal amounts of money as itemised below: The NPA wishes to inform the public that in Non-Conviction Based Forfeiture proceedings, the NPA initiates an action in accordance with the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crime Act, against the tainted property and not the person or owner of the property. These court judgments are an exhibition of the NPA’s dedication and commitment to fighting financial and economic crime. The NPA could not have scored these successes without the unfailing support of the Drug Enforcement Commission, whose robust investigative techniques have led to the aforementioned forfeitures.

Strengthening Justice: Combatting Sexual Violence with Prosecutor Training

From October 9th to October 13th, 2023, the National Prosecution Authority organised a five-day training program in the lovely Samfya district. The training brought together prosecutors from Luapula province. This program, generously supported by the Natwapane Programme under the European Union’s Gender-Based Violence initiative, aimed to improve the skills of these prosecutors in handling cases of sexual violence. During this significant training event, Mr. Gilbert A. Phiri, S.C., the Director of Public Prosecutions, addressed the attendees. He stressed the importance of putting the well-being of victims at the heart of the justice system.
